National Support School Status

Following our Outstanding Ofsted judgement in all areas - Leadership and Management, Behaviour and Safety of pupils, Quality of Teaching, Achievement of pupils and Early Years provision - our school was appointed as a National Support School by the National College of Teaching and Leadership.

Our headteacher is a National Leader of Education for the country and she and members of staff support other schools and colleagues by sharing expertise and best practice.

National leaders of education (NLEs) are outstanding headteachers or principals who, together with the staff in their schools (designated national support schools (NSS)), use their skills and experience to support schools in challenging circumstances.
In addition to leading their own schools, NLEs work to increase the leadership capacity of other schools to help raise standards. The National Leaders of Education and National Support Schools Programme is about using people’s skills to make a difference to the educational experience of more children.

At the same time, being an NLE will provide a broader experience that will benefit the home school. NSS staff can also be involved in a wider context and gain important career development opportunities. It can help with succession planning in schools as it provides opportunities for promotion. The head and staff bring back new ideas from the schools in which they work and they are refreshed and energised by the opportunities that this work offers.

The programme also gives staff in the national support schools an opportunity to 'step up' and take on more responsibility, either in the supported school or their own school. Many of those involved have identified this as one of the greatest strengths of the programme in helping to bring on the next generation of school leaders at all levels.

Our school has supported, and continues to support, a range of other schools in the area through our expertise in areas such as leadership, subject leadership, SEND, literacy (particularly writing), phonics, Early Years provision, assessment, attitudes to learning, quality support from teaching assistants and providing a creative curriculum. We also support and host a number of students in teacher training.
