Welcome
from the Headteacher

I am proud to be the Headteacher of this wonderful school. Kington St Michael is a caring, close-knit community where children, staff and families work together to ensure every child thrives.

Our school offers a welcoming and nurturing environment where children have the space to learn, play and grow. Our vision, ‘Learning together, aiming high’, reflects our belief that by working together, every child can achieve their full potential.

We would be delighted to welcome you to visit and see our wonderful school in action.

The KSM Difference

  • Wonderful Community Image

    Wonderful Community

At Kington St Michael, we pride ourselves on being a warm, welcoming and inclusive community. Our school thrives because of the strong partnerships between staff, governors, parents, carers and pupils, all working together to provide the best possible experiences for every child.

Our governors play a key role in supporting the school, helping to shape its vision and ensuring high standards are maintained. The Friends of KSM School Committee, run by an enthusiastic group of parents, enhances our children’s education by providing activities, equipment and resources beyond what the school budget can cover.

Family and community involvement is at the heart of school life. Parents and carers regularly support reading with children, helping on trips, and volunteering in classrooms, creating rich learning experiences. Pupils enjoy a wide range of community celebrations and events, including sports day, nativity performances, concerts and end-of-year productions, all of which bring the school together and showcase pupils’ talents.

Charity work is also central to our ethos. Through fundraising for causes such as Bristol Children’s Hospital, Chippenham Doorway Foodbank and Children in Need, children develop a strong sense of empathy, kindness and social responsibility.

This supportive, collaborative community ensures that every child feels valued, connected and inspired; creating a school where children, families and staff flourish together.

  • Academic Success Image

    Academic Success

Our teaching is of the highest calibre. Every member of staff is an experienced, well-qualified professional, deeply committed to each child’s progress. This year, we achieved a 100% success rate in the Phonics and Early Reading Assessment (PERA), reflecting how solidly we build confidence and foundational skills in our youngest learners. Pupils perform exceptionally well in statutory assessments, consistently exceeding both local and national outcomes.

We embrace technology to make learning engaging and inspiring, using a variety of IT equipment to bring lessons to life. Alongside this, we place great value on traditional skills – teaching children to handwrite beautifully, nurturing a love of books and reading, and planning rich, creative lessons across all subjects.

Ofsted’s most recent inspection (February 2025) captured our ethos perfectly, noting: 'This is a nurturing and happy school, where pupils enjoy learning. The school has high aspirations for what pupils can achieve. Pupils meet these expectations. They work hard and achieve well across the curriculum.'

  • Outdoor Learning Image

    Outdoor Learning

Set in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside, our school provides a welcoming and nurturing environment where children have the space to learn, play and grow. Our extensive outdoor areas include an Early Years garden, a mud kitchen, and a brand-new Forest School space, offering pupils endless opportunities to explore, discover and be active.

Playtimes are lively and varied, with skipping ropes, ball games, rounders, hopscotch, giant chess and more. For children seeking a quieter moment, benches and picnic tables create inviting spots for reading and conversation. We also offer a lunchtime Dove Club, run by our pastoral lead. Our buddy system pairs older and younger pupils, fostering strong friendships, kindness and a true sense of community.

Surrounded by fruit trees, a vegetable patch and our flourishing school garden, children develop a deep appreciation for nature and the environment – learning first hand the value of care, curiosity and outdoor adventure in a safe, supportive setting.

  • Wraparound Care Image

    Wraparound Care

Our school offers a welcoming breakfast and after-school club, known as ‘The Nest’, providing high-quality wraparound care for children of parents and carers who require additional support outside of school hours. The Nest runs every weekday in the school hall from 7:40am to 6:00pm, led by a wonderful, experienced team committed to making every session enjoyable and enriching.

The emphasis at The Nest is on play and leisure, with opportunities for children to complete reading or homework if they wish. A wide range of activities and games are available, including puzzles, board games, air hockey, pool, drawing and colouring, themed craft projects, model making, LEGO, small-world play, and a variety of outdoor games and sports to promote physical development.

  • Personal Development Image

    Personal Development

We are proud that Ofsted graded our personal development provision 'Outstanding', noting:

'The personal development offer for pupils is impressive. Pupils learn about fundamental British values exceptionally well, talking with maturity about the importance of individual liberty and mutual respect. They understand why discrimination is wrong… Pupils are very well prepared for life beyond school.'

At Kington St Michael, we focus on developing children’s character alongside their academic success. Pupils enjoy a wide range of clubs and enrichment activities, trips and sports, and leadership opportunities such as school and worship councils, play buddy schemes, and leading assemblies.

Through our values programme, collective worship and real-life experiences, pupils grow in confidence, resilience and kindness – preparing them exceptionally well for life beyond school.

My daughter absolutely loves coming to school at KSM and a huge part of that is the staff who have always gone above and beyond to ensure that all the children feel safe; feel heard and feel valued. The students are all such lovely children - they are always looking out for each other and it is clear that their kindness and compassion is encouraged at school.

Throughout her time here she has required additional support and assistance and the team have really catered to what has been required and have helped to ensure that she does not miss out. The staff are always finding new ways to keep learning fun and interesting as well as helping the children to retain the information. I couldn't be happier with how she feels coming to KSM and the caring environment that she is in each day.

We feel extremely lucky to be part of the wider community at Kington St Michael Primary School. The staff are incredibly kind, caring and attentive, with both of our boys feeling well supported and valued. This positive and encouraging environment is reflected in the progress they are continually making both academically and personally.

We love that there is a real sense of community amongst the pupils themselves, where the children look out for each other and form great friendships. Our boys are happy and enthusiastic about attending school, which is a real testament to the school and the staff.

There is no doubt in my mind that we made the right choice with KSM. Our girls are excited to go in and learn every day, and the staff just get them as individuals. As parents we feel listened to and the school is open and approachable. Most important of all however, our children are happy, and that to me is the best.
