At Kington St Michael CE Primary School, British Values are at the heart of our ethos and daily practice. We promote these values through our assemblies, Religion and World Views lessons, PSHE sessions, and through our school rules and expectations.
At KSM, we actively embrace the British Values of mutual respect, tolerance, the rule of law, democracy, and individual liberty. These principles are shared by many cultures and countries across the world, and they help prepare our pupils to become responsible, respectful and active members of society. Alongside these, we also foster a wider set of values that underpin our school community. All of these values are woven throughout our curriculum, and we are proud of the many ways we teach, model and celebrate them.
Through everyday school life, assemblies and classroom learning, we nurture qualities such as generosity, compassion, courage, forgiveness, friendship, and respect. Each term, we focus on a specific value in greater depth, exploring its meaning and importance through stories, discussion, activities and reflection. This approach helps our pupils to develop a strong moral foundation and to grow into thoughtful, caring and responsible individuals.
In addition, we ensure pupils understand how British Values apply to real-life situations. They learn about democracy through opportunities such as school council elections and class decision-making. They explore the rule of law by discussing fairness, understanding school rules, and learning about how laws keep us safe. Individual liberty is encouraged by helping children make informed choices in a secure environment, while respect and tolerance are taught through learning about different cultures, beliefs and perspectives, both within our school and in the wider community.
Together, these experiences help our children develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to thrive as respectful and active members of modern Britain.
