At KSM, our intent is to ensure that every child becomes a confident, fluent and enthusiastic reader with a lifelong love of reading and literature. We deliver high-quality phonics teaching through the Unlocking Letters and Sounds programme, which provides a systematic, synthetic approach to early reading.

Our phonics curriculum is designed to:

  • Build strong foundations in recognising and using sounds (phonemes) and letters (graphemes) to read and spell words.

  • Develop confident, independent readers who can apply their phonics skills across the curriculum.

  • Support every child, ensuring learning is carefully sequenced, engaging, and responsive to individual needs.

  • Foster a love of reading, using carefully matched decodable books that allow children to practise skills successfully and experience early reading success.

  • Provide consistency and continuity, so that all staff teach phonics in a clear, structured and progressive way using the Unlocking Letters and Sounds scheme.

Through a strong phonics foundation, we aim for all children to leave Key Stage 1 as fluent readers who enjoy reading, can access a broad and rich curriculum, and are prepared for lifelong learning.
